I describe how knowledge generated through this study informed the development of the “Computer Club,” an intervention designed to support children’s development and educational achievement. , Williams, 1994), the pastor and other adults at First Baptist Church both prioritized educational achievement and identified school as problematic for many African-American children. In particular, children’s computer literacy was identified as a specific area of need and one which the church members and I, in cooperation, could fulfill.

I interviewed all adults at least once, and one of three African-American, undergraduate women from Spelman College, who studied with me for a summer, interviewed at another time. These interviews yielded approximately 2 hours of audiotaped recordings for each adult.
